LoRa Sensors Losing Packets at Range: How I Fix Long-Range IoT Links

Nikhil Robinson · · 2 min read

LoRa promises kilometres of range, but real deployments often lose data at a fraction of that. How I find and fix the cause.

The problem clients bring: "The datasheet said kilometres. In our farm or factory deployment, sensors a few hundred metres away keep missing readings."

What is really going wrong

  • Antenna, matching network or enclosure losing much of the signal before it leaves the board.
  • Spreading factor and data rate chosen for speed, not for the link budget needed.
  • Gateways placed low or behind obstacles.
  • Duty cycle limits silently dropping transmissions.

How I solve it

  1. Measure signal strength and margin at real node locations, not on the bench.
  2. Check the RF path on the board and in the enclosure.
  3. Choose radio settings, or adaptive data rate, to match the link budget each node needs.
  4. Add acknowledgements and retries only where data really matters, within duty-cycle rules.
  5. Advise on gateway placement before buying more hardware.

What the client gets

A network that delivers the data it was designed for, often fixed with configuration and placement rather than new hardware.
