GPS Tracker Battery and Data Costs Too High: Efficient LTE-M and NB-IoT Firmware

Nikhil Robinson · · 2 min read

Cellular trackers burn batteries and data plans fast when the firmware is not built for it. How I make them last.

The problem clients bring: "Our trackers need charging every few days, and the cellular data bill is higher than planned."

What is really going wrong

  • The modem stays registered and awake between reports.
  • The modem's own power-saving modes are not used or not accepted by the network.
  • GPS takes a full cold start for every fix.
  • Each report uses a heavy protocol with large headers.

How I solve it

  1. Use the modem's power-saving and extended sleep modes and confirm the network grants them.
  2. Report only when it matters, using motion detection to wake.
  3. Keep GPS assistance data fresh so fixes are fast.
  4. Send compact payloads over a lightweight protocol.
  5. Measure real current and data usage on the target network.

What the client gets

Much longer battery life and a predictable data bill, which often changes the business case for the whole product.
