Noisy or Drifting Sensor Readings: How I Fix Measurement Accuracy in Firmware and Hardware

Nikhil Robinson · · 2 min read

When the numbers jump or drift, customers stop trusting the product. How I make sensor readings stable and accurate.

The problem clients bring: "Our readings jump around, drift during the day and differ between units. Customers are questioning the product."

What is really going wrong

  • Noise from switching regulators, motors or radios coupling into the sensor.
  • ADC sampling configured too fast for the signal source.
  • No per-unit calibration, so every board's offsets show up as error.
  • Temperature effects never measured or compensated.

How I solve it

  1. Look at the raw signal on a scope to separate electrical noise from firmware issues.
  2. Configure sampling and timing correctly for the sensor.
  3. Apply filtering that removes noise without adding lag the product cannot accept.
  4. Add per-unit calibration during production and store it on the device.
  5. Characterise and compensate temperature drift where it matters.

What the client gets

Stable, repeatable readings across units, and a calibration process the factory can run.
