Laggy or Flickering Touchscreen UI on a Microcontroller: How I Build Smooth LVGL Interfaces

Nikhil Robinson · · 2 min read

A product that looks slow looks cheap. How I get smooth, responsive touch interfaces on microcontrollers and small Linux boards.

The problem clients bring: "The screen flickers, animations stutter and touches feel delayed. It makes a premium product look cheap."

What is really going wrong

  • The whole screen is redrawn for every small change.
  • Display data is pushed by the CPU instead of DMA, blocking everything else.
  • Frame buffers are too small or sit in slow external memory.
  • The UI runs in the same loop as sensors and communications, so they fight for time.

How I solve it

  1. Configure the graphics library to redraw only what changed.
  2. Move display transfers to DMA with double buffering where memory allows.
  3. Place buffers and assets in the right memory for speed.
  4. Give the UI its own task with a steady refresh rate.
  5. Design screens around what the hardware can draw quickly.

What the client gets

A smooth interface on the hardware they already have, and guidance on display and memory choices for the next revision.
