Preparing Firmware for Mass Production: Flashing, Provisioning and Factory Testing
The firmware works on ten units. Thousands at a factory need a different process. How I make products ready for the production line.
The problem clients bring: "The factory is ready to build thousands of units, but flashing each board by hand takes minutes, and we cannot tell which units are bad until customers complain."
What is really going wrong
- Programming uses development tools and manual steps.
- Each unit needs a unique serial number, keys or calibration, done by hand.
- There is no functional test, so faulty boards ship.
- Nobody records which firmware went on which unit.
How I solve it
- Build a one-step flashing and provisioning tool operators can run without training.
- Generate and record per-unit identity, keys and calibration automatically.
- Add a factory test mode that checks every peripheral in seconds and prints pass or fail.
- Log results per serial number for traceability.
- Lock debug access and enable security features as the final step.
What the client gets
A production line that programs and tests each unit quickly, catches faults before shipping, and keeps a record of every device.
